Point of Use (POU) Case Study Overview
Following initial meeting with ADEQ and Watts Premier, a list of issues and consideration regarding the point of use strategy were listed out .
Some of the issues surrounding the implementation of a POU program that were discussed during these meetings and to be addressed in the pilot study were:
Community size and applicability for POU program
- Initial community acceptance
- Educational material needed
- Scheduling the installation and maintenance check
- Other O & M Requirements
- Record keeping requirements
- Maintenance logs
- Test result logs
- Applicability of quick test kits
- Community response once the program is in place
- Compliance Status of the community using POU
In late 2003 two communities were selected for the program, one small community and one very large community. The two communities selected for this project were Michael's Ranch (MR) representing the small community with 20 current residential service connections; building up to 40. The large community was Black Canyon City (BCC) which has over 750 connections including private, public and commercial dwellings. It was determined that having a small and a large community will provide useful information regarding community size applicability for the POU program.
Both communities obtain their water through wells that are owned and operated by the water system. In both communities there is little to no treatment occurring in the water system. None of the water used for the community is from a direct surface source.
Initial meetings were held with both communities which were coordinated directly through the water utility. During this meeting residence of Michael's Ranch and Black Canyon City were invited to participate in the discussion on point of use and the question and answer session that followed. These town meetings were used as educational sessions where the POU units were reviewed and the community could participate in a question and answer session with ADEQ and Watts Premier the provider of the POU RO units.
